Dentures
Complete dentures have teeth that are attached to pink plastic bases. Partial dentures (also known as removable bridges) have replacement teeth that are attached to pink plastic bases that are connected by metal framework.
Inserting and removing the new complete/partial denture takes some practice. It may feel awkward for the first few weeks; however, your mouth should eventually become accustomed to wearing it. Dr. Mastrostefano recommends that all complete and partial dentures be removed before going to bed to allow for your oral tissues to rest.
When you receive your new complete/partial denture, begin by eating soft foods that are cut into small pieces. Avoid very sticky or hard foods and chewing gum while you adjust to your removable partial denture. If at first you find it difficult to pronounce certain words, practice by reading out loud. Repeat the words that cause trouble and within a short period of time you should become accustomed to speaking properly.
It is absolutely necessary to clean your partial and your natural teeth to help prevent tooth decay and gum disease that may lead to further tooth loss. Pay special attention to cleaning teeth that fit under partial dentures metal clasps. Plaque that is trapped under the clasps can increase the risk of tooth decay. A partial denture that is not kept moist could lose its proper shape. At night, the denture should he placed in a denture soaking solution or water.
As you age. your mouth naturally changes, which can affect the fit of the pink plastic base. Your hone and gum ridges can recede or shrink. resulting in a loose fit. The denture clasps also play become loose from normal wear. Anything that affects the precise fit of the removable partial denture can cause irritations and sores. If it needs adjusting, do not try to do it yourself. An improperly adjusted partial denture also can cause sores and irritation. Using a do-it-yourself kit can damage the removable partial denture beyond repair. If your removable partial denture no longer fits, if it breaks, cracks, or chips. or if one of the teeth becomes loose, see Dr. Mastrostefano immediately.
