Dental Implants
Dental implants are man-made "anchors" that look like screws. They are artificial replacements for natural tooth roots. They can he used in the upper and lower jaws for stabilization of teeth. Dental implants are made of titanium that is compatible with the human body. Once Dr. Glick places the dental implant, there is a healing period in which the body's own bone tissue seeks out the dental implant and permanently fuses to it. After the healing period is completed, Dr. Mastrostefano then creates a tooth, which is affixed to the implant resulting in the most natural restoration both cosmetically and functionally. A single tooth implant is a freestanding unit and does not involve treatment to the adjacent teeth. With a dental implant, if the surrounding teeth are healthy, they can remain untouched, and their strength and integrity may be maintained.
Dental implants have been used for several decades. Dental implants have become the standard of care in order to replace missing teeth. One survey shows that 1.5 million dental implants were placed last year. Patients of all ages have chosen dental implants to replace either a single tooth, several teeth, or to support partial or full dentures. Dental implants help restore the ability to chew food. They help fill out a face that could otherwise look "sunken" because of missing teeth. Unlike dentures, implants are not removed for overnight soaking and cleaning. No adhesives are needed.
Many patients report exciting benefits from dental implants such as: replacement teeth the look, feel, and function like natural teeth, improved taste and appetite, improved cosmetic appearance, the ability to chew without pain or gum irritation, and improved quality of life. One additional and very important fact can be the reduction or elimination of bone atrophy or shrinkage, commonly associated with the loss of teeth.
